Building for the Community: Softball Shed Project

Students Making an Impact

Construction students are proud to partner with Essex Junction Parks and Recreation on a new community service project focused on building a softball equipment shed. This hands-on project gives students the opportunity to apply classroom learning in a real-world setting while creating something that will directly benefit local athletes, coaches, and families for years to come.

Throughout the build, students are working through the same planning, construction, and teamwork processes used in the professional trades. From site preparation to framing and finishing work, students are gaining valuable experience while contributing to a project that supports the local community.

Real-World Skills in Action

By participating in this project, students are practicing important construction and career-ready skills, including:

  • Site layout and preparation
  • Measuring and material planning
  • Framing and structural assembly
  • Safe tool and equipment operation
  • Team communication and collaboration
  • Learning Beyond the Classroom

Community-based projects provide students with authentic experiences that go beyond traditional classroom instruction. Students learn how to solve problems on the jobsite, adapt to challenges, and work together toward a shared goal. Just as importantly, they see how skilled trades can make a positive impact within their own community.

Projects like the softball shed help students build confidence, responsibility, and pride in their work while strengthening partnerships between education and local organizations.

Supporting Local Athletics

Once completed, the new shed will provide secure storage for softball equipment and supplies used by local programs and events. The structure will help improve organization and accessibility for teams while supporting recreational opportunities for youth and community members throughout the area.

The project reflects the value of career and technical education by combining hands-on learning, community involvement, and meaningful real-world experience.

Looking Ahead

Students will continue work on the structure over the coming weeks as they move through additional phases of construction and finishing. The project stands as another example of how students can use their skills and training to give back to the community while preparing for future careers in the trades.
